Loulay, Charente Maritime Chez Gaston, Loulay, Charente Maritime, France The house, built at the turn of the last century, is a typical Maison d'Maitre, with large airy rooms, high ceilings and a grand central staircase. Staying here is like stepping back in time to a much earlier era of servants and carriages. We try to make our guests feel as welcome as possible and we are happy to advise on local markets, favourite beaches etc, and we usually have a supply of leaflets from the various tourist offices, these are a great source of information for days out. The Atlantic coast is only 45 minutes away and you will be spoilt for choice of beach locations! A visit to Historic La Rochelle is on most visitors lists. With its wonderful setting on the Atlantic it is a great place to spend a day, and from here you can take a boat trip around the local islands. Among the inland destinations are the lovely town of Cognac, with its distillery tours and the Roman town of Saintes with its triumphal arch and ampitheatre. Both towns are set on the River Charente, where you can maybe hire a boat or just wander around taking in the sites. Closer still are the market towns of St Jean d'Angely with its abbey and riverside leasure area and Surgeres with its roman church, stone tower and park. |
