To discover the real France, away from the tourists, come and stay with us at La Vieille Forge. The local blacksmiths for many years and a 19th century stonebuilt village house, we are located in the small but renowned winemaking village of Berlou. Nestled in the southern foothills of the Haut Languedoc National Park in Herault and 20 miles from the Mediterranean Coast, there is something here for everyone. If you want escapism and complete relaxation, stay local, simply potter around the village itself, try the local wines and read in the shade of the square or on our terrace. Alternatively wander beyond the outskirts of the old village to find perfect walking and cycling and discover the undulating vineyards and patchwork landscape of the Parc Naturel de Haut Languedoc. You will find rivers with their own secluded beaches for swimming, gorges and Medieval villages, such as Roquebrun, dramatically suspended on the mountainsides of the Orb Valley. For something different, try one of our cookery courses at the house run by John with his years of experience in Switzerland and France. Or if you are feeling energetic, try any of the local sports, from canoeing to mountain climbing, sailing or diving. To discover the history and culture of the area further, take a trip on the Canal du Midi or visit the buzzing coastal towns of the Agde, Beziers, Narbonne or the cosmopolitan capital of Montpellier. Alternatively, discover the Camargue and it’s horses at Sete or the bulls at Nimes or, for a day of Medieval history and architecture so prevailant in the Languedoc-Roussillon area, visit the fabulous walled city of Carcassonne or one of the many abbeys in the area. As this is our home, we have taken care to ensure that it has modern comforts, and is tastefully decorated whilst retaining it’s original character. reflecting local mediterranean colours and culture, and some interesting features we have discovered on our travels. The house has four unique guest bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, a separate dining room and communal lounge with comfy sofas and an open fire. Outside our guests will find a typical mediterranean style, south-facing terrace, perfect for sunworshipping, al-fresco breakfasts and dining or reading a good book from our large selection. Whatever images France provokes for you, be it winetasting or gastronomic delights, fabulous scenery and wildlife, history, culture, or beautiful beaches and glorious sunshine, Berlou and her surrounds provide it all. From collecting you from the airport, local restaurants or winetastings, (ensuring you get to enjoy the benefits of the largest winemaking region in the world!), to providing advice on places to visit, markets fetes and celebrations going on in the area during your stay, or organising activities for you, we provide as much help as we can to ensure you make the most of your trip to Languedoc. Please confirm booking including name, address, telephone number, dates required, type of room & beds required, in writing via letter / fax / email. We will send a confirmation of details out upon receipt. Credit card details will be taken in advance but not charged. In case of 'no-show', guests will be charged full amount onto the card unless they have given one week's notice of cancellation of the booking, in which case no charge will be made.
